Specific Learning Difficulties include dyscalculia, maths learning difficulties, and dyslexia.
We estimate there are the same number of children and adults affected with dyscalculia as dyslexia (1 or 2 in every typical class) we just haven't found many of them yet!
While dyslexia is much better recognised with more assessors specialising in literacy difficulties, there are far fewer assessors who specialise in maths difficulties. Although I'm in Bath, in the South West of the UK, I find myself asked to assess students from London, Devon, Hampshire and Wales!
Formal recognition of this lifelong learning difficulty and an agreed definition and criteria for diagnosis have only happened in the last 5-10 years.
There so-called dyscalculia "assessments" available online but these may be screeners, at best and are simply not worth the trouble as they cannot diagnose a specific learning difficulty in maths/dyscalculia that will be recognised by teachers, institutions or exam boards. There are few true specialists who are able to meet all the professional guidelines for this diagnosis, but, here you have found one! Welcome!

Why seek a dyscalculia diagnosis?
Find out the reason your child or young person has been struggling in maths for a long time. It could be dyscalculia or maths learning difficulties that's been holding them back from achieving their potential. However, an assessment does not always provide a diagnosis as their difficulties may be otherwise explained. All this will be comprehensively reported, empowering you with knowledge to take the next steps to support them. Insight into their unique learning profile will have a positive impact on their whole education pathway.
A Dyscalculia Diagnostic Assessment Report will:
- Identify strengths and specific barriers to both maths and learning more broadly, such as working memory or visual processing and receive strategies and recommendations to remediate these.
- Receive an individual cognitive profile including their underlying or potential ability.
- Screen for or highlight potential difficulties in literacy, other specific learning difficulties and neurodiversities (with referrals where appropriate)
The report will enable you to advocate for your child's needs so that they can be understood and supported better in school, and importantly, accept themselves as they are. Some people find huge relief knowing that they're not 'stupid' but that there is a reason why understanding numbers is like an unbreakable code.

Assessment for Learning
You may choose to start your journey with an Assessment for Learning. This is not a diganostic assessment; I will not be able to say whether your child has dyscalculia, but I can identify their particular barriers in maths and make reccomendations to support these at home and in school.
This is appropriate for any age and also for children aged 5-7y who are too early in their development to be given a diagnosis, but who may benefit from an early intervention to prevent their anxiety growing and effectively switching them off to maths.
Exam Access Arrangements (EAA)
I am fully qualified to assess for Exam Access Arrangements in schools and undertake regular JCQ guidelines training. This work is undertaken directly with schools, not parents, and requires the schools to provide a Form 8 in advance of any assessment I undertake.
